Legs Exercises

Legs need the longest rest of any muscle group because the movements recruit the most muscle mass. Rest 3 to 5 minutes on heavy squats and deadlifts, 2 to 3 minutes on secondary compounds, and 60 to 90 seconds on machine isolation work.

How legs training affects your rest

A heavy squat or deadlift recruits more muscle mass than anything else you do, so the cardiovascular and neural cost per set is far higher than the load alone implies. This is why leg day genuinely takes longer than upper-body days, and why treating that as wasted time and cutting rest is the most common way lifters undermine their own leg training.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should you rest between leg exercises?

Rest 3 to 5 minutes between heavy squat and deadlift sets, 2 to 3 minutes on secondary compounds like Romanian deadlifts and leg presses, and 60 to 90 seconds on isolation work such as leg curls and calf raises.

Why does leg day take so long?

Because the rest is genuinely longer, and it should be. Two heavy lower-body lifts with four minute rests is around 30 minutes of rest alone. Cutting that rest does not make the session more efficient, it makes your later sets substantially lighter.

Do squats train hamstrings enough?

Not fully. Squats train the hamstrings as hip stabilisers but do little knee flexion work, which is the hamstrings other main function. Add a hip hinge such as a Romanian deadlift and a knee-flexion movement such as a leg curl.

Can I train legs without a barbell?

Yes. Bulgarian split squats, lunges, leg presses, hip thrusts and machine work all load the legs effectively. Single-leg work in particular allows a strong stimulus with far less absolute load and spinal demand.
